Ode To The Greatest Showmen
By Enoch Akinlabi.

_____

I hail their skills
Never have I seen
Such lucrative work without work
They have caused millions to disappear
As though by magic, billions have followed suit
They have reinvented theft as appropriation
Corruption as networking
They jostle and do battle
In the Assemblies turned arenas
I have seen Thor’s hammer
Be wielded as the mace of justice
Their arithmetic still amazes me
Where to every 5 communities a project is done
10 pieces head home to roost
I have seen roads left to fallow for years like a farmland
Only to be cultivated when visitors come to visit
The lands I come from are magical
This is not fairy dust and glitter
This is Black Magic
Where those meant to catch the corrupt
Are more corrupt than the corrupt
They have crossed the carpet
Uncrossed the carpet
Rolled up the carpet
And eventually stolen even the carpet
The new party is the old party
While the old party is the new new party
How I love this theatre
The audience is so engrossed in laughter
They don’t realize they are part of the act
Some are starting to wake
But still they return to buy tickets yet again
To see this marvellous performance
This is not a story
This is not an ordinary poem
This is an ode
To the Greatest Showmen
The world has ever seen
