As human beings, we are the top species on planet Earth. We understand and we are able to comprehend most things, but, there are still a lot of bizarre happenings that are unaccounted for, thus the word ‘superstition’.
Superstition can be defined as an irrational but usually deep-seated belief in the magical effects of a specific action or ritual, especially in the likelihood that good or bad luck will result from performing it. For example, when walking under a ladder or crossing someone’s leg, etc. It is considered that the person who walked under a ladder will have bad luck and someone whose legs have been crossed over by another individual will grow shorter.
It is also said to be a belief which is not based on human reason or scientific knowledge, but is connected with old ideas about magic, etc.
Although science and technology have helped us to understand our planet and the world beyond it better, and art has helped us to connect the dots of our past, they have not been able to answer all the questions that we humans have, for example: what lies beneath the Bermuda Triangle?, when will the world come to an end?, what will cause this end? These questions have rendered even the world’s greatest philosophers and physicists ignorant.
We were created to have dominion over everything created. That means that our brains are wired to have the need for knowledge. We all want to know who or what did it and why it is happening. When we have struggled to find an answer and we do not get one, we provide ourselves with an answer that best suits our need, something absurd so as to calm our minds and to feel within ourselves that we are still in control and that is why there are superstitions.
